Conservatory Roof Grants: What's Actually Available

Searching for a grant to pay for a new conservatory roof turns up plenty of promises. Here is what exists in England at the time of writing, and what does not.

9 min read

The plain answer comes first. Nothing in the way of a national grant will fund a new roof, and conservatory roofs are treated no differently. The schemes that do exist are built around insulation, heating and home adaptations, and their rules are set by the scheme, not by us or by any installer who rings you up.

That matters because conservatory roofs attract a lot of grant talk. Cold callers, comparison sites and some adverts imply that money is available if you act this week. This guide lists the schemes that were live in October 2026, what each is for, which have already closed, and how to check a claim for yourself. It also covers the other things that cut the cost of a replacement, such as repairing instead of replacing and choosing the build that suits your frame. It belongs with our conservatory roofs pages for Taunton and Somerset. Nothing here promises that you qualify for anything, since each scheme sets its own eligibility.

The honest answer on conservatory roof grants

As things stand in England at the time of writing, nothing at national level funds a new roof. A conservatory roof is a new roof on a conservatory, so the same answer applies. Nothing in the schemes below is described by their own pages as covering a conservatory roof replacement.

Why do so many adverts suggest otherwise?

Because grant language sells. A caller may say that a government scheme pays towards insulation and then steer the conversation towards a product that the scheme does not actually cover. Someone offering a free or heavily funded conservatory roof should be asked three things: which scheme, who runs it, and where the rules are published. A genuine answer names the scheme and points to its page on GOV.UK or the Ofgem website.

If they cannot, or they pressure you to sign today, step back. Citizens Advice says to collect at least 3 written quotes from separate traders ahead of choosing, and that holds whatever funding is said to be on offer. For advice on a consumer problem, its helpline is 0808 223 1133, and a call is sensible ahead of signing anything that depends on a grant.

Each scheme's own page is the place to check what it funds and who qualifies. What we do is look at the roof first and photograph the frame, so that the cost you plan for is the cost you pay.

A scheme that exists for loft or wall insulation is not a scheme for a conservatory roof, even if the same installer sells both.

ECO4 and who it is for

The Energy Company Obligation, known as ECO4, is the scheme described on Ofgem's website. That page says ECO4 will run until 31 December 2026, and it is the place to check what happens afterwards.

What kinds of work does ECO4 fund?

It funds energy-saving measures in eligible homes, chosen by the assessor from a survey of the whole house: insulation and heating upgrades are the usual shape of it. It is not a pot you can draw on for a roof you simply want replaced, and the supplier or installer decides which measures are offered, not the householder.

Does ECO4 help with a conservatory?

Whether a conservatory counts as part of the heated home for the scheme's purposes is a question for the assessor and the scheme rules. We cannot answer it for you and would not want you to book work on the assumption that it does. If an assessment is offered, ask for the measures to be listed in writing, then decide on the roof separately.

Eligibility depends on household circumstances and the property, and it is checked by the scheme. Being told by a caller that you qualify is not the same as being assessed and accepted.

With ECO4 due to close at the end of this year, anything that depends on it is time-limited, and the end date is another reason to avoid agreeing to work on the strength of a phone call. Our survey does not depend on any scheme and carries no deadline of that kind, so you can take your time over the decision.

Warm Homes: Local Grant and the wider plan

The Warm Homes: Local Grant is for insulation, and GOV.UK says your household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less. The word usually matters. There are other routes onto a scheme, and the application page sets out the details, so read it before settling on either view.

Is it a grant for conservatory roofs?

No. It is a grant for insulating a home, assessed and arranged through the scheme. If you are applying, you apply to the scheme, and the work it offers is its choice. We would not tell you that a conservatory roof is among the measures without seeing the scheme's own list.

What is the Warm Homes Plan?

The government's Warm Homes Plan is published on GOV.UK with a figure of £15 billion attached. It is a programme of policy and money, not a cheque you can claim for a conservatory. Keep an eye on its announcements, because the schemes that sit under it change as they are launched and closed.

What about the Great British Insulation Scheme?

It has ended. GOV.UK's page says installations must be complete by 31 March 2026, when the scheme ends. If anything still advertises it as open, treat that advert with suspicion and check the date on it. A scheme page that has been closed cannot take your application, whatever a caller says, and an installer who is vague about the end date is not giving you what you need.

For a disabled household there is a separate route: the Disabled Facilities Grant, which is up to £30,000 in England. It is for adaptations to make a home accessible, and a conservatory roof is not what it is for, but if a family member needs adaptations, it is worth asking your council about.

Tax and VAT on the work

VAT is the other cost to understand. The standard VAT rate is 20% and applies to repairs and re-roofing work on existing homes. Before you set quotes side by side, see whether each includes VAT and scaffolding, because a quote that leaves them out looks smaller than it is.

Is there a reduced VAT rate for energy-saving work?

HMRC's Notice 708/6 covers energy-saving materials, and for installations made between 1 May 2023 and 31 March 2027 it sets a zero rate, reverting to the reduced 5% rate from 1 April 2027. It lists particular materials and heating equipment. We would not assume a conservatory roof, or a tiled roof build-up on a conservatory, is within it. If you believe it is, ask your roofer to explain which part of the work they think qualifies, and ask HMRC if the answer is unclear.

A tradesperson who cuts the VAT on the strength of a promise and cannot show why is leaving you with a problem later. A quote should say what is charged and on what basis.

Compare like with like. One quote may be for a polycarbonate roof, another for a tiled build-up, and a third for glass, and the VAT line on each is about its own materials. Our page on conservatory roof replacement cost shows typical UK ranges and what moves them.

Do not delay a needed repair to wait for a scheme that may not cover it. Water getting into a roof frame costs more the longer it runs, and timber that stays wet for a season is timber you may have to replace along with the roof.

Ways to spend less without a grant

With no grant on offer, the useful questions are about the roof itself. Does it need replacing at all? Would a repair do? And if it does need replacing, is the build chosen the one that suits the frame and the way the room is used?

When does repair beat replacing?

A leaking joint, a single cracked sheet, failed seals or a loose bar are repairs. A roof with many stained sheets, a frame that is rotting, or glazing that is cloudy throughout has little useful life left. For polycarbonate, HomeBuilding quotes a typical lifespan of 10 years, and The Eco Experts give glass or polycarbonate roughly 10 to 15 years. Both are typical figures and not limits. Our guide to repairing or replacing a conservatory roof helps you weigh it.

Does the choice of roof change the running cost?

It can. A better-insulated roof reduces the heat the room loses, which matters if the conservatory is heated. That is a saving across years, not a grant, and it needs to be weighed against the larger price of the better roof. Our insulating a conservatory roof guide explains the options without suggesting that any of them is free.

If the damage came from a storm, the insurer is the first call. Tell them first, arrange a temporary repair, and file away your photos and receipts. The first job on a leaking roof is making it safe, and the claim itself stays between you and your insurer. Your policy wording says what it covers, so read it before you decide whether to claim.

How to check any funding claim

Take a few minutes before you agree to anything, and do not let a caller hurry you. Write down the scheme's name, the organisation running it, and the person who contacted you. Look up the scheme on GOV.UK or the Ofgem website yourself, rather than following a link you were sent.

  • Does the scheme page mention conservatory roofs by name?
  • Is the scheme still open to new installations, given the end dates above?
  • Who assesses eligibility, and is it in writing?
  • What would you pay if you are not accepted?

What should be in writing?

The measures offered, the price you will pay, who does the work and who stands behind it. If any part depends on you being accepted onto a scheme, the paperwork should say what happens if you are not. A written price from a roofer should state what is included and whether it covers VAT and scaffolding.

Where do we come in?

Our part is the roof. The conservatory gets a proper look, with photos of the frame and the existing roof, and the total comes as one written figure. That price does not depend on a scheme being approved, so you can decide on the work with the cost in front of you, and look at any funding separately.

When you are ready, send a few pictures of the conservatory roof from inside and out, with the address, and we will agree a day to visit and inspect it.

Funding queries

Can I get a grant to replace my conservatory roof?

Nothing at national level pays for a new roof, a conservatory roof included. The schemes that exist cover insulation, heating and adaptations, and their own rules decide eligibility. A caller offering a funded conservatory roof should be asked which scheme it is and where its rules are published.

Is the Great British Insulation Scheme still open?

No. GOV.UK says installations must be complete by 31 March 2026, when the scheme ends. ECO4, run through Ofgem, was due to run until 31 December 2026, and the Warm Homes: Local Grant is for insulation where household income is usually £36,000 a year or less.

Does a conservatory roof qualify for reduced VAT?

Do not assume so. The standard rate of 20% is charged on repairs and on re-roofing existing homes. HMRC's Notice 708/6 covers listed energy-saving materials for installations made between 1 May 2023 and 31 March 2027, so ask which part of your job a roofer thinks qualifies.
